For my first edition of screen prints on my new press, I created Buddy Check. The title is a playful nod to the scuba diving practice of checking in with your dive partner to make sure they’re okay — something you kind of do when you give someone flowers, too. The idea of diving between big, blooming chrysanthemum flowers felt fun and a little adventurous, but definitely something best done with a buddy.
The real spark for this piece was the chrysanthemums. I’d been a bit obsessed with them for a while but wasn’t sure how to draw them. Out of context, or in the wrong composition, they don’t immediately read as flowers — but placed in a vase alongside orchids, they suddenly make sense. They’re such an interesting, layered flower to explore.
This print is hand-pulled in a delicate blue ink on beautiful, thick, 300gsm archival paper. I recommend keeping it simple with a wooden frame to let the print shine. Since each print is hand-pressed, slight variations naturally occur — no two are exactly the same, which makes each one a little extra special.
