Solivagus II

29.7 × 42 cm

2-layer screen print on 300gsm paper

Edtion of 10

Solivagus, meaning "wandering alone," was inspired by an excursion to the Cederberg, a beautiful wilderness area in the Western Cape.

During the trip, I spent time walking by myself and was struck by how safe I felt. Living in a busy, vibrant city is wonderful, but it often requires a certain level of vigilance. In many wilderness areas, there are different concerns, whether that is dangerous animals, difficult terrain, or simply being far from help. I've always found peace in those spaces, but I've also nearly stepped on an African rock python longer than I am tall.

The Cederberg, and many of these mountainous desert landscapes, offer a different kind of peace. There is a sense of freedom in being able to wander alone through a place that feels vast, quiet, and welcoming. Yes, anything can happen anywhere, but the ability to explore a landscape by yourself is a special kind of magic.

The hiker in this print is not me, but a fellow traveller.

Why the "II"? This print marks a milestone in my screen-printing practice. It is the most layers I have used in a screen print so far, and it felt like a natural point to acknowledge the progress I've made in the medium.

Each layer worked as a piece in its own right, so Solivagus I and Solivagus III (Layers One and three) are also available as separate prints in very small editions.

This edition is limited to just 10 prints. Once they are sold out, that's it.
