Original hand drawn ink artwork on watercolour paper.
This is a stunning cacti species. They can grow big and green without much love. The fruit they carry is also beautiful to look at. It starts as a yellow flower, progresses into a small purple fruit which is tomato-red on the inside.
That being said, I still hold a grudge against this plant. I can remember grabbing the fruit with both hands as a child when it was freshly picked and my fingers still sting at the memory.
Prickly pears are covered with microscopic thorns that are so difficult to get out once they are in your hands.
The fruit is coming into season again now, I will be drawing it, but giving it a wide birth otherwise.
